AutoCAD: Resetting any extension on your Windows to open with unknown app

I make use of AutoCAD alot. AutoCAD is a drafting app developed by Autodesk. While drafting AutoCAD periodically creates a backup file for your drawing. These files are saved with “.bak” file extensions.

Well, I mistakenly set these “.bak” files to open with “Adobe reader”. Thus whenever i double clicked on these file extensions, Adobe reader attempts in opening it. However, this is futile. To open it, I do need to rename the file extensions from a “.bak” to “.dwg”. Then I can now open it with AutoCAD.

This was actually okay. But I just didn’t like the fact that my “.bak” files were now opening with the wrong app by default.

Solution

  1. Open a Notepad and type anything into it.
  2. Save your Notepad as any name. For example, name it as “abc.bat”.
  3. Go to your “.bak” file and right click on it. Select open with “abc.bat”. Click on more apps, if you do not find it listed. Make sure you check the box listed as “Always use this app”.
  4. Now go to your “abc.bat” file and delete it from your Computer.

Now when you go to your “.bak” file, you would find out that the file will be identified as opening with an “unknown app”.

This method works for Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 10 versions.
